Festival Lights✨

If you read my blog post about Coachella than you have a clue on what to expect, and should know by now that stilettos aren’t considered dancing shoes on a field. That doesn’t mean you can’t dress cute, because you shouldn’t sacrifice style for comfort. Plus, sometimes the fact that music festivals are a judgment free zone gives you the liberty to express yourself through fashion. Below are some ideas on how you can mix fashion with comfort for those fun nights.

Layer Up

Depending on what festival attending make sure you’re ready for what the day throws at you. Whatever the weather might be like you want to be covered, so nothing will get in the way of you enjoying your lineup. For Alexandra’s look, I used a bralette I hand beaded (will show details soon), shorts, light weight long sleeve (that can be tied around waist when not being used), distressed denim shorts, and boots (these doc’s are stylish and will help you in case there’s muddy ground).

Express Yourself

Have fun with your festival outfits. Whether you want to be an EDM mermaid, or rock goddess this is your chance to be who you want to be. Let your imagination run wild. The white shorts on Dia are actually plain white mesh shorts that I paired with some fun metallic rainbow shorts underneath to tie in the mermaid festival look (found on Amazon).

Astonish Yourself

Hey you, yes YOU!! You are an incredible human being, and don’t you forget that. In between all that hard work you are putting in, don’t lose yourself. I know there have been days that I don’t feel like doing the most. I’m like, “I’m just going grocery shopping, no one is going to see me anyways.” You too?

Well, stop THAT! It’s a slippery slope of not giving a fuck. Yea, it’s good not to care about some things, but it’s never ok to not give a fuck about yourself. Sorry for the explicit language, but it’s the best way I could word it. I noticed that recently to not draw attention to myself, I was dressing down.

As time passed, my mood and perception of myself started to dress down too. These pictures of me getting my car washed were the day I decided that I was not going to dress who I am as a person down. I don’t care if I’m going to take the trash out in PJ’s, I’m going to look like a bad ass doing it. There is no better outfit than confidence, and as much as “anti-fashion” people hate it, fashion says a lot about you to the world. What you wear is self expression (even your confidence).

Even being “anti-fashion” is a fashion. In order to not look trendy, they make sure that what they wear is not trending. That makes their choice of clothing express what they feel, and without knowing are participating in fashion. Think about that the next time you want to give up on yourself, and try using that as an excuse.

Give it a try, and you might astonish yourself. You can always start small for example trading sweats for denim? As for me, I’m going to dress up my work wardrobe next. Feel free to comment below for any questions, or topics you would like for me to discuss next.

Haciendo Lo Mas

No. 1

No.2

No.3

If you would like to read this blog post in a different language this site has google translate.

Don’t Fret

DSC03586Every once in a while, you get moments in your life where everything is on a roll. It seems like your stars are aligned and the blessings are piling up. When you feed more positive vibes to it, you notice everything is going better (bigger blessings). Then, you get a little voice in your head (negative thoughts/people/situations). Don’t fret.

I get it, it’s hard. They say, “it’s all on YOU”, and “it’s your mindset”. Take control of it. It’s so easy to say, but the truth is…just like all great things in life it takes time. Shit, I’M still working on it. I have gotten to that point where I’m super positive, and things are going SO great that I decide to spread that positivity to others BUT they aren’t ready. They have a comeback to everything, as to why everything you are suggesting wouldn’t work, to what they’ve tried. Don’t let it stop you. Keep your head and vibes up.

“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” ~Dalai Lama

Yes, some might say they aren’t being pessimists, but that they are being realist. That can be true, and trying to change someone’s mind who is determined on sticking to their mindset is only going to drain your battery. Maybe they are just going through a rough patch, and don’t want to hear it. Just let them be. Know this, the positive energy you have in YOU should not stop because of this. Happiness comes from within, and although the mood and circumstances of those we love can change our mood (temporarily) we can’t let that kill our entire vibe.

It took me a VERY long time to even get to a point where I can talk about positivity, motivation, and being inspired again. It took this blog, a detox, and having an inner conversation with myself to get to this point again. I’m not letting anything or anyone stop that from rolling. During lent last year, I gave up social media and read many books about “happiness”. One stood out called, “The book of JOY”. In one of the of the chapters called “Nothing Beautiful Comes Without Suffering”,  the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu talk about “how we face the negative in our lives is what determines the kind of person we become”, and that spoke to me.

I’m not saying give up on people, or cut them out of your life. I’m saying, don’t let a series of negative thoughts/circumstances/comments dictate your future/thoughts/moods. Use those as lessons to create something beautiful. Be like the lotus flower that grows in the mud, or like Tu Pac would say, “the rose that grew from concrete”.

What is stopping you today? See you next week.

Discover Your City

Welcome to Houston, a city full of diversity, pride, and hearts of champions .

DSC03863

Last year our city faced one of the biggest floods we have seen in our lifetime due to Hurricane Harvey. A time where some would try to focus on themselves to get ahead, but not Houston. Houston opened their doors, hearts and pockets to help their neighbors. To see the shelters and food banks have to turn down volunteers, because they had more than enough…that was a beautiful reminder of good humanity. It was a true awakening.

DSC03890

This year, we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of Discovery Green. A beautiful park in the middle of downtown where families can go out, and enjoy some art with our beautiful skyscrapers hugging it. It is a big milestone, so the city decided to do something very creative by creating a collage with pictures submitted through Instagram that were tagged by #DiscoveryGreen10. This was a beautiful way to become part of history, so below is the picture I went with.

DSC03887

Everything we go through in life leads to something bigger, and I like to think that this is just the beginning. Not just for my city, but for all of us. We get humble, and we get stronger everyday.

Congratulations Discovery Green on your 10 years!! Wishing on many more.

Coachella🎡

It’s been a while since I’ve been on the grounds of Coachella Valley, but it will forever be in my memories. I can’t wait to one day be there again. If this is your first time going, or you are planning on going in the near future this post is for you. I’ll be sharing some of my must haves for Coachella. Let’s just say, I wasn’t completely ready on my first time in 2015, but I’m here to get YOU ready.

Tip #1– wear comfortable shoes. This one may seem like common sense, but you will be surprised how many people end up barefoot. Girls wearing sandals that bother them, and I get it we want to look cute. Just remember that it will get crowded (you will get stepped on). Guys, make sure your sneakers don’t rub or you won’t be so comfortable either.

Tip #2– The accessories I’m about to mention, are not only fashionable they are also convenient. Bring your favorite hat 🧢, sunglasses 🕶, and backpack/camelback 🎒. When you are finally at the front, seeing your favorite artist perform you want to fully enjoy it. You don’t want to have to squint, or put your hands over your eyes because the sun is in your face. You also don’t want to look back at the sea of people behind you, and have to give up your perfect spot to get water. Fill up your stylish backpack with a refillable water bottle, and you won’t have to worry about that.

Tip #3, dress in layers. It’s going to be blazing hot during the day, but could be freezing cold at night. Throw a light sweater/hoodie in your bag. Don’t have a bag? Tie it around your waist.

Tip #4- If you see pictures of people wearing bandanas around their necks, it’s not just to look cute. Although, you could really make them look good…it’s because there’s a lot of dust flying around and you don’t want to inhale all of that.

I hope these tips are useful to you all for your upcoming festival season, and have fun!! 💋✌️

American Hu$tle:Part II

Welcome to American Hu$tle: Part II, Let’s dive right in.

I started igniting my passion for fashion again, I decided to apply to all the schools in Texas offering a Major in Fashion Merchandising.

I only visited one university, and although it was beautiful it was not for me. The university I ended up choosing I had never been to, or even visited San Marcos. I just knew it had one of the best programs for that field from what I read online, and applied. I didn’t find out I was accepted until a few weeks from the semester starting. After that, everything happened so fast that I had to break the news to my parents as soon as found out.

Photography by Jesse Soto of Jexse Studios. 03/24/2018. Styled by Jenny Soto of JenStyleHou. Jacket: Forever 21, Romper: Romeo+Juliet Couture, Shoes: A New Day, Handbag: Sergio’s.

Parents: Ja! Porque? (thinking I’m joking)

Me: Me aceptaron a la Universidad de Texas State

Parents: 😄😄😯😯🤗🤗

If you don’t know Spanish, I’m going to sum it up for you…I told my parents I had less than a month to look for an apartment, but when they found out why they helped me look for apartments in a place we didn’t know much about.

Two years later, I graduated with my B.S in Family and Consumers Science with a major in Fashion Merchandising. Something a first generation daughter of two people that came here with nothing but big dreams worked her ass for. Semesters of me having to work two jobs, night shifts, having two working parents, and even my brother putting in work so that I could make it happen.

My day job is working in the Oil and Gas business. Nowhere near where I thought I would be at this point in my life. When I found that most fashion companies were only offering me retail management positions, I knew that’s not what I wanted for me. I knew I belonged in a corporate setting. I still wanted to keep a part of my love for fashion alive, and I always loved writing.

That’s how the concept for JenStyleHou came to me. When I was in college I didn’t have money to buy all the clothes I wanted for the good job interviews, so I had to learn my closet. Also, learned how to make cheap look expensive. I hope to keep sharing my knowledge with you.

You’re probably thinking, “Is Part II the end?” Not even close. I’m just like many of you still working to get to do what I love and finding my way.
